Oil Painting

Jessica Olpp

Jessica grew up in the beautiful bushlands of Warrandyte, and has lived and worked in France. She is currently based in Caulfield North, Melbourne.

Artist Profile

Jessica has always nurtured her creative side through dance, poetry and the study of foreign languages. She is a self-taught artist who began painting as a means of creating moments of calm in her busy life as a French teacher. Jessica is inspired by the colour palettes of both Australia and France, beautiful skies, memories of overseas travel as well as the simplicity of still life moments. In 2024 she was invited to exhibit with The Toowoomba Gallery at the Affordable Art Fair (Brisbane and Sydney). She was also a finalist in The Doyles Art Award still-life category. Jessica’s work recently featured in the Christmas special edition of Country Style magazine and has been sourced for interior design projects in Melbourne.

Her work is currently stocked at Forman Art and Framing (Melbourne) and Foray Design Store (NSW.)

Artist Interview

What medium do you work with, and why have you chosen them?

I work with high-quality oil paint as I adore the soft effect it produces. This gentle, hazy quality tends to characterise my paintings.

How does your artwork get from initial concept to exhibition stage?

I sketch out the basic premise of the work as an underpainting, then gradually add detail. Knowing when to stop usually comes intuitively; I'd rather say less than too much in a piece. My work is professionally framed in natural oak which finishes it off beautifully.

Can you tell us a little more about your creative working environment/studio?

I paint from my open-air studio at home, which is quite a modest set-up but works for me. It is typically quiet and allows me to focus on painting, which I do standing over an old desk or at the easel for larger pieces.
