Artist Profile

Belinda Marshall is a Melbourne-based abstract landscape painter. Her work honours the power of the landscape to draw us from our everyday preoccupations into a place of deep and tranquil connection.

She is inspired by the shapes revealed when landscape forms interact with the skyline, when light filters through the moving canopy and falls in patches on cascading lower levels and banks – the shifting and merging of layers in her work offer a softer world with endless room to breathe.

Belinda’s work hangs in collections around the globe and has been featured in local and international interiors magazines and blogs.

Artist Interview

What medium do you work with, and why have you chosen them?

I work with acrylics and love them for their flexibility, quick drying and easy clean up. I have developed my own way of using them that suits my creative approach and stretch them to achieve results similar to working with water colour and oils which, without the limitations associated.

How does your artwork get from initial concept to exhibition stage?

I immerse myself in the landscape and take lots of photos. In the studio I makes sketches and studies with a focus on very particular captured details. While the photos, sketches and studies inform the resulting painting the magic happens on the final piece where the lead up work gives freedom to sink into a quiet space of just me, the canvas and the paints.

Can you tell us a little more about your creative working environment/studio?

My studio is a light-filled open space in my home. I use the walls for an ever-changing inspiration board / visual reference collage! I like to be able to see and curate studies, colour swatches and collected images to keep myself on track and comfortably inspired in the space.
