Artist Profile

Anna Henderson lives in the beautiful New England Tablelands in NSW. She creates small to large semi abstract works on canvas and wood. She also works with clay.

Anna’s work is somewhat of a journey. Largely influenced by a ceramic background, her landscapes start with a thin plaster base on canvas or wood and left to dry for two days. Then a lot of sanding, scratching etc, a landscape is created through carving back into the surface and using oil sticks, charcoal, oils inks, oil pastels creating a multi layered work. Lots of lines, markings and texture, a landscape with a lot of history.

Artist Interview

What medium do you work with, and why have you chosen them?

I work in mixed media, acrylic, oil sticks, oil and charcoal on a thin plaster base on canvas or wood. I choose plaster as a base for all my work, because I love the textures that can be created from this medium and its flexibility.

How does your artwork get from initial concept to exhibition stage?

It is a journey, lots of sanding, mark making, many layers of paint. I rarely use brushes, my favourite tool is a flexible pottery rib and my hands. The work, when completed, is finished with a Matisse Satin Varnish.

Can you tell us a little more about your creative working environment/studio?

I work in a very messy shed, beside our home, on a block of land surrounded by sheep and cattle properties. We are 33klms from the nearest town.
