Artist Profile

Ashton Wastney is an abstract figurative artist from Nelson, New Zealand who began studying design in Wellington and Since 2018 has been residing and basing his painting practice in Melbourne, Australia.

His works use anatomy as the base for abstraction and he approaches each work without pre meditation or a final intention. Ashton uses art to communicate methods of understanding the subconscious. Then, forming bases of anatomical and physiological aspects, he instinctively reveals moments of chance and emotion, embodying a distortion of mental clarity and consciousness.

Artist Interview

What medium do you work with, and why have you chosen them?

In New Zealand I worked for Resene paints and learnt so much about the manufacturing and technology behind architectural paint systems. Bringing this knowledge into the studio lead me to exploring the possibilities of oil paint and I am constantly playing with new mediums or application methods to achieve different textures and viscosities. The open time of oil paints allow me to really work each layer into the canvas and every stroke is permanent.

How does your artwork get from initial concept to exhibition stage?

Honestly, there isn't much of a concept faze for me. I tend to begin new works with a few chalk lines that loosely resemble the human form as I find this a great starting point for abstraction. From there I go straight in with paint and it's just adding layers until I have enough bold marks and fine details. Realising when to stop is usually the hardest part.

Can you tell us a little more about your creative working environment/studio?

My studio is a cluttered mess but that seems to work for me. When I get in, everything is where I left it last and ready to go. My process is too messy so I prefer to seperate my living and working spaces. I do find having colour swatches and mixed colours on the wall inspiring while I work and often this gives me direction when a work is missing something or I'm fighting with it.
