Artist Profile

Jane Canfield grew up in an artistic family, with her father, Tony Canfield a collected artist, inventor, motor mechanic, and designer. As a family, they often camped in remote areas and so at an early age, Jane learned to be inspired by nature which continues in her work today. As with her love for Poodles and classic cars.

With more than a dozen solo exhibitions to date, Canfield has works in many private collections in Australia and Internationally. Her landscapes are simplified and reduced, creating an impression of the landscape, and using colour as a driving force for the composition.

Artist Interview

What medium do you work with, and why have you chosen them?

I paint primarily in Oils and Gouache, working off smaller studies produced en plein air and producing larger oil paintings in my Studio. I am inspired by the landscape around me.

How does your artwork get from initial concept to exhibition stage?

I work in colour sketches and smaller paintings in Gouache painted in situ and then distill yet again once I get into the studio, breaking down the initial painting into a sketch that I can reduce to simplest forms and colour. I often use the pure colours I mixed at the time for a 'lead' into a painting.

Can you tell us a little more about your creative working environment/studio?

My studio is in the Central West of New South Wales, Australia. It is a large, airy space with lots of natural light. I have spent many years as an en plein air painter, this has helped my current studio practice.
