Artist Profile

Kelly Kondis is an atmosphere painter conveying the interaction between water and the landscape. Living and painting in Melbourne’s Sherbrooke rainforest, Kelly’s landscapes depict many of the distinct elements of the surrounding environment along with inspiration from her love of travel. Balancing the qualities of realism and impressionism her work explores the composition of organic light and texture, together with weather and ecological variations. As a consequence of residing in this unique and contrasting location, her art frequently details the fleeting moments she encounters

Producing vistas that exist in a state of augmentation and transformation, the paintings are often immersive and sensory renderings. She surrenders to her intuitive responses and allow these reactions to guide her process to ensure her works are highly evocative in their nature, summoning sensations of curiosity and enlightenment.

Artist Interview

What medium do you work with, and why have you chosen them?

I love to work mainly with oils for their ability to blend and dry slowly. They allow me to build within the landscape and sky, mimicking the depth of nature.

How does your artwork get from initial concept to exhibition stage?

I have developed my technique and style through practice and repetition. My landscapes are constructed over many layers and in a subdued palette as a means to describe shifts in the weather. While periodically creating works alla prima, most scapes are completed over the course of several weeks, as layers are provided the time to dry, emerge and be added to.

Can you tell us a little more about your creative working environment/studio?

My current studio is in my home in the Sherbrooke Forest in Melbourne. Surrounded by the temperate rainforest, I love that I can paint when inspiration takes hold and that my two studio dogs are always with me.
