Artist Profile
Cath Michael is an emerging artist based in Brisbane. She is a lover of nostalgia and has a particular interest in Mid Century Modern, Vintage and Art Deco styles.
Growing up with a mother who was a high school art teacher, Cath was exposed to various art practices, which included interior and fashion design as well as painting, with a special focus on Dutch artists due to her heritage.
In 2023, a chronic medical condition led Cath to step away from a 20+ year career in finance, allowing her to fully dedicate herself to painting.
Her work features florals, still life, vintage treasures and mid century furniture. Drawing inspiration from sentimental objects and cherished memories, her paintings evoke a sense of warmth and longing for times when life was much simpler.
Cath’s paintings have been exhibited in galleries both locally in Queensland and interstate, gaining recognition for their nostalgic charm and timeless appeal.
Artist Interview
What medium do you work with, and why have you chosen them?
I primarily paint with acrylic due to it's ease of use, however I also enjoy experimenting with oil pastels and watercolour. I take regular private art classes which helps me to learn new skills and refine techniques. I recently began dabbling with linoprint with my art teacher and have been enjoying the process of carving and inking to make custom made prints. I source canvasses and frames from Australian suppliers who provide high quality products including FSC and sustainable timbers.
How does your artwork get from initial concept to exhibition stage?
Much of my inspiration comes from places I’ve travelled, childhood memories as well as vintage items or furniture that I have in my home. In my daily travels, if I see something that sparks my curiosity, I take lots of photos, spend time researching it, and then sketch out an initial concept in my sketchbook. I love the research phase, it’s amazing some of the history you uncover especially with vintage items. This process helps me to decide what setting would best suit, and what feelings/emotions I want the painting to convey. Following the initial sketch I start working on canvas. I find it always takes time for each painting to unfold & it’s not uncommon for me to tweak things as I go along and new ideas pop into my head. I’m very much led by emotion when I paint and I become fully immersed in the process. I also like to take lots of photos of my work in progress. I find it helps me identify areas that need touch ups or that aren’t quite right. There are times where I get to a point where I know a painting isn’t quite finished and I’m unsure where to take it next. When this happens I step away and distract myself with other things until I get that light bulb moment.
Can you tell us a little more about your creative working environment/studio?
I'm fortunate to have my studio at my home, which I share with my son who is at primary school and my two cats, Yuki & Jemima. My studio is located in my garage and has expanded over the last couple of years. It's a great space with lots of natural light, easels and storage. I like the ability to be able to paint from home because when inspiration hits, I just open the door and get to work. Another reason why a home studio is handy is because of my illness. There are many days where I can only paint for a very short time, and knowing the couch isn't far away is very handy!
