Artist Profile

Nicole McPherson Art. Distinctive figurative and abstract art for colourful people celebrating life!

Nicole’s an abstract artist, from Brisbane. Her work is bright, layered and ‘loud’, and predominately about faces and places.

Initially drawn to figurative work, and capturing human expression, she’s morphed from realism to abstract expressionism. This fits well alongside her purely abstract pieces – and you’ll often find a meshing of the two in her works.

Most of her ‘stories in paint’ are inspired by memoires and feelings. Whether they’re from the past, or now, she creates pieces that capture a place or emotion she’s experienced.

Leveraging acrylic and mixed media products, her works are generous and showcase colour.

Artist Interview

What medium do you work with, and why have you chosen them?

I work with Acrylic and mixed media. I started my career in 'oils' but, being time-poor with 2 little kids and a penchant for impatience, i moved to acrylics – it dried MUCH faster and the colours were more 'punchy'! I love the mixed media play I can experiment with in acrylics and will continue to explore and integrate new elements.

How does your artwork get from initial concept to exhibition stage?

My artworks generally start in one of two ways: a message/mood or memory I want to convey or play! I love messing up a canvas and then 'seeing' what emerges from the chaos. It also helps me keep my works 'lose and fresh' and feel alive!

Can you tell us a little more about your creative working environment/studio?

I have a studio at home – that I 'walk to' most days! it's a 'pod' that has all my favourite things in it- mostly paint related. Named after my grandmother Sofie, it's a special place where my 'alchemy' unleashes and I find peace and 'space'.
