Artist Interview

What medium do you work with, and why have you chosen them?

Throughout my studies in art and design, I experimented with a wide range of mediums, but acrylic stood out as the perfect fit for my artistic vision. I am drawn to the vibrant colors of acrylics and love combining them with impasto and other pastes to create rich, luscious textures that bring my paintings to life. Texture is an essential element in my work—it invites interaction, evoking a desire to reach out and touch the surface. The depth and movement within the layers reflect the essence of the Australian landscape, its flora, fauna, and the diverse themes that inspire me. Acrylic’s dynamic color range allows me to truly capture the spirit of Australia in my art, blending it seamlessly with my unique artistic style.

How does your artwork get from initial concept to exhibition stage?

My artwork evolves through a deeply immersive process, from initial concept to exhibition, blending my Armenian heritage with Australian themes and landscapes. Inspiration & Concept Development Every piece begins with inspiration drawn from my surroundings—Australia’s vibrant landscapes, native flora and fauna, cityscapes, and cultural influences. My Armenian heritage plays a significant role, influencing the textures, scrapings, and tribal patterns found in my work, inspired by early Armenian clay, bronze, and carpet designs. I also draw inspiration from the Orphism movement, particularly the works of Robert and Sonia Delaunay, Wassily Kandinsky, Victor Vasarely, and Pablo Picasso. Medium & Techniques I have worked with many different mediums throughout my art and design studies, but acrylic has always stood out to me. Its rich, vibrant colors capture the essence of the Australian landscape, and I enhance its depth by incorporating impasto and other pastes to create luscious textures. Texture is a key element in my work, making my paintings interactive and inviting. Each piece is carefully layered to build movement and dimension, bringing the painting to life. Creation Process Once I have a vision for a piece, I begin sketching and mapping out the composition, often focusing on asymmetrical designs, geometric shapes, and color theory—concepts I have explored since childhood. I then work on the canvas, layering acrylic paints, impasto, and textures, allowing the artwork to evolve organically. Some pieces take weeks or months to complete, as I refine details and ensure each element harmonizes with my artistic vision. Exhibition Preparation Once a piece is finished, I prepare it for exhibition by ensuring it is professionally photographed and cataloged. Some artworks are selected for print editions, such as high-quality giclée or framed canvas prints. Every piece I exhibit is framed in a Tasmanian oak. Showcasing & Exhibiting I exhibit in various galleries and platforms, both online and in-person. and I am currently preparing to showcase at The Affordable Art Fair in Brisbane. I also offer art consultations to help clients find pieces that complement their spaces, ensuring my work resonates beyond the gallery and becomes part of their lives. Every artwork I create is a fusion of color, culture, and texture—designed to evoke emotion, spark connection, and celebrate the beauty of both Australia and my Armenian heritage.

Can you tell us a little more about your creative working environment/studio?

My artistic process is structured yet deeply intuitive, allowing me to bring my vision to life from the initial concept to the final framed artwork. Every piece begins with thorough research, whether I’m capturing a landscape, floral theme, or coastal scene. I take time to study the shapes, textures, and colors that truly resonate with my subject. Once I have a clear vision, I start with sketching, mapping out where each color will go. I also mix and color-match all my paints in advance, ensuring I have large portions of each shade so I don’t run out midway. Before I begin painting, I always give my canvas an extra coat of white—I love starting with a bright surface, free from any grey undertones. My painting technique is all about layers and texture. There’s no blending in my work—each layer is carefully built up, and I wait for one to dry completely before applying the next. This approach gives my work depth and dimension, making each piece feel alive. Because of this process, some of my paintings take weeks or even months to complete. Once the painting is finished, I choose the perfect framing to enhance and complete the piece. Whether it’s a stretched canvas or a framed giclée print, I pay close attention to every detail before it’s ready for exhibition or collection. Art is more than just painting for me—it’s an immersive journey where structure, color, and texture come together to tell a story. Every piece I create reflects my love for Australian landscapes, infused with my Armenian heritage, and I pour my heart into each and every one.
