Artist Interview

What medium do you work with, and why have you chosen them?

I mainly use oil paints and love their creamy texture and extended drying time which allows the painting to be easily reworked until I'm happy with how it looks. I usually reserve acrylic paint for underpaintings and when I'm teaching as it dries faster than oils and I can achieve a quick result.

How does your artwork get from initial concept to exhibition stage?

I usually set my subjects up in a controlled environment, light them and then photograph them. The photo references are then used as source material for my paintings.

Can you tell us a little more about your creative working environment/studio?

My studio occupies the entire attic space in my house. I had it purpose built with great natural light, ventilation and work areas. I even had some shelves installed to accommodate my extensive collection of art books. It has a wonderful view of my garden and surrounding bushland. It's my 'man cave' in the sky.
