Artist Interview
What medium do you work with, and why have you chosen them?
I love oil paints for their versatility, blending, adjusting or wiping out whole areas and creating depth and luminosity, whilst not having to worry about it drying too fast.
How does your artwork get from initial concept to exhibition stage?
I work through initial sketches or creative photography as a starting point. Some paintings are purely intuitive and are exploratory based. I find there is a delicate balance in holding back or pushing a painting too far. I tend to favour thin translucent fluid layers and glazes to build colour and depth, which I may remove and reinstate quiet often until I am satisfied.
Can you tell us a little more about your creative working environment/studio?
I have a backyard studio where I create my paintings, my partner converted an unused garage into a wonderful space to create from. Over the years I have planted a native garden oasis that feels like I am living in the bush, whom I share with my partner, mischievous dogs, a few hens and variety of wildlife. I often step outside to sketch, listen, observe and enjoy.
