Artist Profile
Vanessa is a Brisbane-based artist whose work explores the intersection of still life arrangements and the innate beauty of domestic spaces. With a background in ceramics, developed over several decades of working with clay, Vanessa transitioned to painting a few years ago, finding a new medium that complements her ongoing fascination with decorative vessels, botanicals, and the beauty of the everyday.
A passionate collector of ceramics, fabrics, art books, and artworks, Vanessa creates evocative, moody tableaux that blend personal objects with elements drawn from memory, imagination, and inspiration. Through a dynamic interplay of colour, pattern, and form, her compositions capture the vibrancy of everyday life, celebrating the imperfect and the intimate. Each piece is an invitation to pause, reflect, and find beauty in the ordinary.
Artist Interview
What medium do you work with, and why have you chosen them?
I work predominantly with acrylic paint on canvas as it is clean and easy, and completely enjoyable in its immediacy.
How does your artwork get from initial concept to exhibition stage?
After years of working as a graphic designer I usually begin a painting with a refined colour palette and simple composition in mind. I then start to 'bower bird' elements such as plants, flowers, objects, materials, patterns and textures that I feel will work well together. Then its straight into a rough chalk sketch on a primed canvas and off I go painting all the detail that I love so much.
Can you tell us a little more about your creative working environment/studio?
My 'studio' is a corner of our living room! I would love nothing more that a large light filled studio surrounded by all my collections, but as an emerging artist that commitment is yet to come and I cant wait.
