Artist Interview
What medium do you work with, and why have you chosen them?
I’m primarily a painter who works with ink and acrylic on plywood, going in first with the ink, then coming in with vibrant acrylics. You can allow the ply to peak through the surface, it brings a fresh quality to the works.
How does your artwork get from initial concept to exhibition stage?
I've always got a sketchbook on me – ideas are constantly brewing. Starting a painting often leads to new concepts and the process of making naturally generates more work. When you hit that flow state and just let it happen, it's a kind of magic. There's plenty of trial and error, but you've got to keep creating and backing yourself. Seeing it all come together in the end is honestly the best feeling.
Can you tell us a little more about your creative working environment/studio?
Over the past year, I've been lucky enough to work out of an incredible studio space at The Creator Incubator. Having room to create large-scale pieces and access to a workshop meant I could really push my practice and equipment. That Residency has just wrapped up, and now I'm studying at The National Art School. I'm creating out of the school studios and my new home space. Being in a new environment has definitely stirred up fresh ideas – it's a challenge but an exciting one.
