Itta Somaia

Artist Profile

Osmosis! This best describes how Itta has learned to paint! She is a third generation artist having painted with her mum from early childhood. Itta loves to travel, hike and paint and always carries a small painting kit to capture moments and emotions au plein air. The countries, landscapes, the colours, smells and sounds are carried through into her paintings. Travel and nature her inspiration, texture and colour her font as Itta responds to the seasons in her palette. Currently she is exploring water based oils and oil sticks, painting with texture, loose markings and palette knives. Recent highlights include acceptance into local art prizes and membership into The Gallery-Mount Macedon.

Artist Interview

What medium do you work with, and why have you chosen them?

I like to live as low tox as possible and I paint with water mixable oil paint and no solvents. I enjoy using palette knives, the dremel to scratch through layers and any unusual tools to layer and make marks.

How does your artwork get from initial concept to exhibition stage?

I usually start painting au plein air, sometimes as small scale water colours as I am often hiking. The postcard size paintings are then translated to larger scale oil painting back at home.

Can you tell us a little more about your creative working environment/studio?

My favourite studio is outside with an easel and a box of paints on location! I do have an indoor studio but will often carted it all out onto the deck to be amongst the breeze and the sunlight.
