Rachel paints abstract landscapes and the places she most frequently visit in nature is what inspires me to paint. From references of granite outcrops of Girraween National Park and the coastal beauty of Yuraygir, to the captivating views of the sky and mountains from the verandah of her home.
Each painting is created through a process of layering paint and experimenting with composition, mark-making and the colour palette. I always seek to express an ephemeral sense of balance, depth and luminosity.
Artist Interview
What medium do you work with, and why have you chosen them?
I work with acrylic paint as I like how I can move the paint around and layer it on the canvas. As it dries quite quickly it allows me to create layers quickly.
How does your artwork get from initial concept to exhibition stage?
I like to sit within nature regularly even if it is sitting in my backyard or looking at the sky from the back deck of my house. It is often this feeling of immersing in nature that I like to capture in my paintings. I often work from photos from places we go camping as a family, beach trips as well as from my back deck.
Can you tell us a little more about your creative working environment/studio?
I have a home studio which I love. It is a little haven for me where I get to create and experiment. It isn't far to travel and I like that too.
