Alice’s practice stems from a deep love for nature and a desire to capture fleeting moments of beauty, finding endless inspiration in the Victorian coastline she now calls home. Her work focuses on depicting the ‘magic hour’ which comes with early morning and evening; taking inspiration from seasonal changes, as well as the transformative quality of light and how this adds to the feeling of a place. As a result, her paintings are often quiet, calm and reflective.
Her work is done on an intimate scale and, rather than demanding attention, gently encourages the viewer to lean in and engage with the scene before them.
Artist Interview
What medium do you work with, and why have you chosen them?
I work with oil paints as I just love their rich colours and ability to blend. They have also taught me to become a more patient painter—I work in layers and create a piece over several sittings, which allows me to come back with fresh eyes and see if things are working or not and ultimately connect with my paintings on a deeper level.
How does your artwork get from initial concept to exhibition stage?
My work always begins by being in nature, soaking up all of the tiny details and taking far too many photographs. Back at home, I create studies based on my favourite images, trying to convey not only the scene but the feeling of the moment too. This allows me to play with ideas before I begin the final work.
Can you tell us a little more about your creative working environment/studio?
I work from a spare room in my house which I have fondly dubbed 'the painting room'. Though it’s on the smaller side, it’s one of my favourite rooms in the house, full of plants, books and art; all of the best things.
