Amber Reid is a Sydney-based artist and educator specializing in acrylic painting. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Painting and Art Education from the University of New South Wales. Amber has showcased her work in both group and solo exhibitions, both in Australia and internationally.
Amber’s work draws inspiration from the natural and built environments, focusing on vibrant colors and simplified forms. Recently, her time living in Darwin, NT, has influenced her work, which explores the concept of “visual escapism” through depictions of the tropical landscape and historical architecture, all rendered in bright hues and a semi-naïve style. A strong love for colour drives her creative process as well as an interest in architecture and mid century design.
Artist Interview
What medium do you work with, and why have you chosen them?
I mainly work with acrylic because I love the immediacy of the medium. I often work using layers of flat colour taping off areas to produce sharp lines and shapes which requires a quick drying time.
How does your artwork get from initial concept to exhibition stage?
Usually with a certain amount of angst! I'll start with sketches and colour trials. A work can often evolve during the process and occasionally turn out quite different than the original concept, but that's all a part of the journey of creating an artwork!
Can you tell us a little more about your creative working environment/studio?
have a space at home that I use as a studio, I like to surround myself with images that I love and listen to music while I am painting. Hours can fly by when I am in 'the zone"!
