Ayla Kaarin

The diversity of the Australian landscape is what inspires me as an artist.

Artist Profile

In Ayla’s journey as a visual artist, she embarks on a multi-disciplinary exploration, weaving together mediums in unexpected ways to articulate narratives. Much like the dynamic evolution of our surroundings, she infuses her artwork with insights garnered from these transformations, integrating diverse artistic styles into each piece.

Ayla’s passion for portraiture and figurative art finds expression in the urban landscapes that populate our daily experiences, whether through direct engagement or through the lens of a camera. Each piece becomes a snapshot of a moment in time, capturing the essence of individuals and the unique paths they tread and that our essence is fluid, ever-changing, and shaped by the interactions and memories we collect along the way.

From the tender age of seven, drawing became her sanctuary, an emotional outlet that blossomed into a lifelong love affair with art. Fuelled by the same fervour that ignited her creative journey, she is driven by a profound belief in art’s ability to transcend boundaries and touch the lives of others. We exist not only for ourselves but also for the impact we have on those around us.

Ayla strives to illuminate the myriad facets of human existence, celebrating our collective journey of growth, transformation, and self-discovery. With each artwork aiming to capture the essence of what it means to be human, to exist in multiple dimensions simultaneously, and to embrace the beauty of our ever-evolving selves.

Artist Interview

What medium do you work with, and why have you chosen them?

In my artwork, I skilfully utilise multiple mediums such as oil pastels, soft pastels, and copic ink markers and charcoal to create a profound sense of depth. By leveraging the rich, vibrant hues of oil pastels, the subtle, delicate textures of soft pastels, and the bold, precise lines of ink, I construct layered compositions that draw the viewer into a dynamic visual experience. Each medium contributes uniquely: oil pastels provide a dense, lush base; soft pastels add nuanced shading and soft transitions; and ink introduces sharp contrasts and intricate details, together forming a harmonious and immersive piece.

How does your artwork get from initial concept to exhibition stage?

My creative process begins with inspiration drawn from nature and photography, capturing moments of individuals immersed in daily life. These snapshots become the foundation for the compositions, which start with an initial sketching process to explore form, emotion, and narrative. Through careful refinement, these sketches evolve into dynamic artworks, where layers of detail and meaning are built. Each piece is crafted with an eye for storytelling and connection, culminating in a finished work that invites viewers to engage with the journey from concept to exhibition.

Can you tell us a little more about your creative working environment/studio?

I find inspiration and focus in my small home studio, a personal sanctuary that fosters creativity and exploration. Surrounded by my artworks, the studio becomes a dynamic space where past pieces serve as a source of motivation and reference, fuelling the evolution of new ideas. This environment allows for an immersive creative process, where initial concepts are nurtured and refined through sketching and experimentation. The interplay between completed works and emerging projects creates a continuous flow of artistic energy, making the studio a true reflection of my journey and vision.
