Artist Interview
What medium do you work with, and why have you chosen them?
He works in oil on canvas. Casey sees the world in vivid colors, which can be best demonstrated in oil paints, and which will stand the test of time.
How does your artwork get from initial concept to exhibition stage?
Casey paints from images he stages or that he finds and photographs on holidays or daily life. He will combine (often multiple) images that have a common tapestry of color, to produce the single work. He then draws the image onto the canvas, and proceeds slowly to work the painting from top left to bottom right of the canvas, finishing as he goes. His method takes him into an almost meditative state of detachment, with his eclectic music sounding out over the neighborhood. Most of his average size paintings (100 x 75 cm in size) take over 60 hours to complete.
Can you tell us a little more about your creative working environment/studio?
I work in the sunroom of our apartment. We are in a gorgeous Art Deco building. It has lovely natural light and looks out to the street below. It is great people watching when I am stuck for inspiration. I like to have music, or podcasts going most of the time, or sometimes work quietly until I start to feel things coming together with the work and then the music kicks in. All depends how I am feeling on the day.
