Oil Painting
Charlotte Moore
Charlotte Moore is a self taught contemporary impressionist oil painter inspired by the coast and the hinterland.
Artist Profile
Charlotte Moore, an emerging artist, has lived on the Gold Coast in Queensland all her life. Her love of its beautiful coastline and the hills marking the transition from coast to country inspire much of her work.
Charlotte’s primary medium is oil paint and she works with an impressionist style, inspired by time spent in the natural environment. Both light and colour play an important role in her work conveying a sense of calm and peace that comes from being immersed in nature, while also evoking a familiarity of Gold Coast scenes and the Australian landscape.
Artist Interview
What medium do you work with, and why have you chosen them?
I work primarily with oil paints. The gorgeous texture and rich colours of oil paint draw me back to them every time. I also appreciate the slower drying time of oils, which enables me to manipulate the paint over the course of a sitting to achieve the effect I desire. I use both palette knife and brushes when painting. I find palette knife work helps me loosen up and also build beautiful texture, while brushes create different shapes and fine details.
How does your artwork get from initial concept to exhibition stage?
The majority of my work is inspired by time spent in nature. Exploring stunning rainforests, country drives or coastal walks provide me with a plethora of ideas. Often I work from photographs of scenes that I have taken and then build upon them by memories of the colours and light and way it felt to be in there at the time. Once I have chosen the scene I wish to paint, I sometimes do a quick sketch or just start straight on the canvas. I often paint in a single session, working with the wet paint until I am happy with the scene.
Can you tell us a little more about your creative working environment/studio?
There is a small room in my house, which I call my studio, (but my husband calls it his office and my daughter calls her violin room). One side is full of shelves of my art in various stages, a desk full of paints, palettes, brushes and canvases. There is a beautiful window which lets in lots of light and through which I can see the garden outside. I love disappearing into this space and getting lost in the paints!
