Artist Profile

Gina is an Australian artist, living in Brisbane. She is known for her structured compositions that intertwine bold tones with hidden emotional depth.

While flirting between architectural and figurative subjects, her paintings are infused with refreshingly clean contrasting abstract lines that are harmonised with a dynamic tonal palette. Her signature sharp defining edges evoke additional depth and dimension through the subtle mismatching of her geometric compositions.

Her use of metaphors and proverbs through her titles are a way to tell her story through her colourful pieces as a collective and individual identity. Of late she holds a particular focus on the female persona and experience.

Artist Interview

What medium do you work with, and why have you chosen them?

When I paint, I tend to be fast paced. I like to work through concepts quickly to see if they work or not. I use acrylic as they are typically faster dryer and they work well with my lifestyle. I am able to stop and start and pick right back up from where I left off easily.

How does your artwork get from initial concept to exhibition stage?

Depending on the piece, whether it be architecturally based or figurative, I start with a sketch then grid the canvas and transfer. Or, sometimes I skip the middle man and go straight to canvas and tempt fate. It depends what my subject is and how precise the dimensions need to be. Once the initial marks are made and the colours chosen, I am then able to be in a state of flow with music or a podcast in the background. The colour choice is on intuition and how I feel the composition can evoke emotion or tell a story.

Can you tell us a little more about your creative working environment/studio?

It's important for me to have moments of quiet during the day, to really map out my thoughts and different concepts of artworks and to reflect. This starts with a morning walk with our schnauzer Alfred. Then it's straight to a hot cup of coffee in my home studio. The room has wide open windows facing north and west, I move my easel to catch the light as the day goes on. I discovered Blues quite early on in life, when I'm lost or feel as though a piece isn't going together, I always play something from the greats to get my blood flowing and back on track.
