Jacqueline is interested in painting what it feels like moving through and connecting with particular environments. The abstract paintings build up over time with emotive colour and gooey brushwork being key. A path motif in various forms has emerged as a recurring feature in her work over time.

Jacqueline has completed a Bachelor of Visual Arts, Honours in Creative Industries and Doctorate in Philosophy (Creative Arts). She has worked as an artist and educator for the past decade. Her most recent major solo exhibition was at ‘Distract/Attend’ at Logan Art Gallery, 2024.

She currently lives in Mcleans Ridges, northern NSW with her young family.

Artist Interview

What medium do you work with, and why have you chosen them?

I primarily work with acrylic paint/mediums and ink. I enjoy acrylics as they dry quickly, allowing me to build up many layers in a ‘collage-like’ way, giving the surface a gathered history of sorts. I want my paintings to have lived. Mediums are often added to make transparent layers over thicker brushwork. Drawing elements are often added in final layers using oil sticks.

How does your artwork get from initial concept to exhibition stage?

To start a body of work I often take lots of photos of inspirational places, textures, and moments. These photos kickstart paintings, along with a general colour scheme but I don’t plan the work. I paint across many canvases at once, moving between surfaces, letting the outcomes unfold and surprise.

Can you tell us a little more about your creative working environment/studio?

I’m very fortunate to have recently built a new studio connected to my home. It has fabulous ply walls that allow me to work on many paintings at once and fabulous distant views over rolling hinterland. I think it is my favourite place in the whole world!
