Artist Profile

Karin Cutler is mixed media painter creating richly textured abstract paintings as well as moody, tactile, minimalistic still life paintings. Influenced by her Scandinavian background she enjoys working with a muted palette, often with hints of brighter colours or metallics hidden in layers. She likes to create paintings that are tactile and evoke feelings of peace and calm yet have layers of intrigue. She finds inspiration in the natural environment including decay and weathering and her paintings are guided by emotions.

Karin splits her time between two studio spaces; one on a rural property on the Mid North Coast of NSW and the other in her Sydney home.

Her paintings are in private collections in Australia, the USA, South Africa, Sweden, Greece, Austria and Hong Kong.

Artist Interview

What medium do you work with, and why have you chosen them?

I use a variety of tools and mediums including natural pigments and textures collected from my surroundings. I experiment with various textures to achieve unique effects. I often add in subtle mark making using charcoal, graphite, crayons, pastels and oil stick. I am on a never-ending journey to find new ways to express myself on the canvas with emotion and authenticity. I aim to express feelings and emotions rather than realistic representations.

How does your artwork get from initial concept to exhibition stage?

I have an experimental attitude, allowing music, spontaneity and emotion to guide me and invite the viewer to add their own meaning. I work in layers which involves adding paint then scraping and sanding back revealing little hints of 'history' to show. Along the way I am aware of principles of design, using techniques to ensure the final piece feels balanced and interesting. I

Can you tell us a little more about your creative working environment/studio?

My studio is a large converted shed, surrounded by paddocks with cattle and horses. It is my favourite place to be.
