Artist Profile

Kate Slowey is a self-taught artist based in Sydney. She has always used creation as a means of expression. What is expressed varies from the personal to the universal.

Within a short space of time, Kate has created a figurative body of work characterised by one line studies of faces and forms – seeking expression of their emotion and the moments to which they are a part.

Exhibiting for the first time at one of Sydney’s three annual art fairs in 2022, she was one of the highest selling artists and her works were acquired and placed in private collections nationally and internationally. She continued this trend after exhibiting at the same art fair in 2023 and 2024.

Her work has since been selected by chief curator of the world’s leading online gallery for inclusion in a collection and published in a leading Australian art and interior design magazine.

Artist Interview

What medium do you work with, and why have you chosen them?

Currently, I work on paper and sometimes canvas. I use a mix of acrylic paint and oil crayons, depending on the work. The fluidity of acrylics appeals to me and is well paired to the style – as are oil crayons which add texture yet maintain flow.

How does your artwork get from initial concept to exhibition stage?

An artwork evolves. The initial concept or image may percolate over weeks or months in my mind's eye – others are of the moment. The next stage is drawing the line on which the work is based before painting. I know that a work is finished once any addition would be a detraction.

Can you tell us a little more about your creative working environment/studio?

I have a studio in my home into which I retreat to spend time creating the works. A favourite from my 2023 exhibition which I kept for myself, the first work of its style, hangs on the wall. Remainder pieces – framed, naked canvas and cardboard covered prints – rest against the same wall. It's otherwise quite bare apart from the table and chairs. It’s a room that knows its purpose.
