Artist Interview

What medium do you work with, and why have you chosen them?

I paint mainly in oil. I have only done so for a few months and before that I worked in acrylics, watercolour and pencil. I love the way the colours stay intense, you can blend beautifully or show the brushmarks.

How does your artwork get from initial concept to exhibition stage?

I spend quite a bit of time taking photos, looking for inspiration and finding the subjects I am interested in painting. I work largely from those photos, mainly painting on board I have either primed myself or small gesso boards. I try to paint quickly and not overwork things, which is so hard sometimes. Mainly I will finish a piece in the same day or over a couple of days as the end result stays fresh. I am so fortunate that my husband makes my gallery frames for me which really finishes them off.

Can you tell us a little more about your creative working environment/studio?

I work from home in Melbourne and currently paint in my home where I like to be part of the comings and goings of my family. We are carving out a space in my backyard for my studio as I'm a bit messy and my art supplies are taking over the room. I like to paint in the morning and stop when I get tired as that's when things tend to go pear shaped.
