Lucy creates abstract works that explore the dynamic relationships between movement, texture, and colour. Her medium of choice is acrylic paints on canvas, where she uses bold, bright colours and energetic strokes to convey a sense of movement through my paintings. Lucy builds up paint to create texture, which shifts shadows throughout the day as the light changes, creating a constantly evolving experience for the viewer. Drawing from her background as a maritime engineer, Lucy’s understanding of hydrodynamics and weather systems deeply informs the fluidity and motion in her work. The ever-changing landscapes of Tasmania, particularly the mountainous terrain and patterns Lucy finds when bushwalking, are also a significant source of inspiration for her. These are reflected in the layers of Lucy’s paintings, as she builds up many layers of paint to create a sense of motion and flow that invites the eye to move across the canvas. Lucy’s intention is simple: I want my art to bring colour, vibrancy, and excitement into people’s homes. Through her work, she hopes to share a little piece of the energy and beauty that she sees in the world.

Artist Interview

What medium do you work with, and why have you chosen them?

I work with acrylic paint, primarily on canvas. I enjoy the freedom that acrylic paint bring and how I can be build upon each layer to create my distinctive paintings full of motion and flow. Canvas creates a strong base for her work to be based on and does not create any restraints when Lucy paints her large expressive pieces.

How does your artwork get from initial concept to exhibition stage?

Each piece of my art starts from a memory, feelings or simply just a colour. My first few layers on the canvas are very loose and I enjoy the freedom to play, exploring colour placement and creating motion across the canvas. From here I build on each layer until I reach my distinctive style filled with expressive movement, colour and texture. Each piece is then finished with a protective varnish, signed on the back, initialed on the front and framed in hardwood timber.

Can you tell us a little more about your creative working environment/studio?

My studio is located at the back of my home in an old garage that my husband converted into a beautiful creative space for me. In my studio I like to surround myself with flowers, paint supplies and photos of my travels or photos clients have provided for inspiration for commissioned pieces.
