Artist Interview
What medium do you work with, and why have you chosen them?
I primarily work with oil on board. I love how oil paint lets me sculpt out distinctive shapes, or contrarily, create soft transitions. I find it such a versatile and responsive medium.
How does your artwork get from initial concept to exhibition stage?
Often an idea for a painting happens in a split second of observation. I try to record this moment as best I can through a quick sketch or photo, which I use as the basis for my final painting. When I’m painting, I’m attempting to conjure how I felt in that initial moment of noticing. At first I like to work quickly, capturing large shapes, before moving on to the more specific.
Can you tell us a little more about your creative working environment/studio?
I am lucky to have an adorable little studio at home. My setup is right next to where our chickens live, so it’s lovely to listen to them go about their day while I paint.
