Artist Profile

Born in England and moving to Australia when she was 10, Natalie still has strong ties with the UK. Living in London and Scotland with her husband certainly made an impression which is evidenced in some of her work.

Natalie’s painting style has developed greatly since taking her first watercolour classes in Wimbledon, London 20 years ago. Much of the last 20 years has been about experimentation and persistence. She has created a diverse range of paintings from large scale, realistic floral oil paintings to delicate watercolour florals, acrylic seascapes and landscapes. Now, a simplified approach where colour and confident brush strokes, composition and impressionism are what she strives for. Natalie uses multiple layers of paint to build depth and details. Seeing the painting come to life with energy is extremely satisfying and exciting to her. Natalie works from her home in North Brisbane which she shares with her husband, teenage daughter, two cats and a dog.

Artist Interview

What medium do you work with, and why have you chosen them?

I mainly paint in acrylic as I am impatient and love the quick drying nature of this medium. I work in layers to build depth and details. I also use water soluble oils and sometimes watercolour.

How does your artwork get from initial concept to exhibition stage?

Nature and colour among other things inspire me. Sometimes paintings are so easy and pretty much paint themselves. Other times they go in a totally different direction and end up nothing as intended. I work in layers and love glazing. I build up the values and details until I have achieved the feeling, concept that I am happy with.

Can you tell us a little more about your creative working environment/studio?

I paint in a large room which was used as a billiard room by its previous owners. We intended it to be our dining room but slowly over time, it's become my art room. It has lots of light and is (thankfully) large and spacious. It overlooks the garden, the pool and beautiful Tibouchina trees.
