Artist Interview
What medium do you work with, and why have you chosen them?
Most of my works are acrylic paint on paper, I enjoy the immediacy of creating quickly and responding to marks on the page. Knowing that I cannot cannot repaint over things forces me to eliminate excess ideas and the result is a beautiful, simple, direct visual statement.
How does your artwork get from initial concept to exhibition stage?
I paint intuitively with little to no planning. I may have a few colours or shapes in mind, or these will come to the forefront as I create the piece. The painting is completely process oriented and reveals itself during it's creation whilst I respond to marks I have made with playful curiosity, the ideas iterate and build momentum. Oftentimes I feel lucky and surprised at the end result!
Can you tell us a little more about your creative working environment/studio?
I have a home studio and hire pop up short term studios for bigger projects or when I am creating large / oversized paintings. I am a member of the Aerie Ecology Network at Burrinja where I like to book a table casually. This allows me to step outside my routine and be around other artists. I find creative conversations with my peers result in a ripeness that really influences my work.
