Artist Profile
Patrick Mavety is an Australian painter based in Mulubinba (Newcastle, NSW). His practice explores the everyday, encompassing countryside and urban landscapes, interiors, and portraiture. In his Newcastle studio, Plein air studies merge with memory and oil paint as he engages in a constant dialogue with his medium, the history of art, and his environment. Mavety’s work serves as a journey of self-discovery, celebrating the beauty of his surroundings while inviting viewers to share in that beauty. His approach offers an opportunity to immerse ourselves in a moment through painting, countering the trope of “the brooding artist.” Mavety believes that beauty is essential, especially in the face of life’s challenges. Patrick Mavety graduated from Hunter Street Art School in 2015. He has held five solo exhibitions and took part in eighteen group exhibitions. He is a two-time finalist in the Hunter Emerging Art Prize, a finalist in the Blackstone Gallery Works on Paper Art Prize, and a semi-finalist in The Darling Portrait Prize.
Artist Interview
What medium do you work with, and why have you chosen them?
I use oil and semi pastels to do studies en plein air which I use as for the finished oil painting at my studio. Drawing is the foundation of painting and I am exploring the relationship between those two processes, where they are the same and where they depart from one another.
How does your artwork get from initial concept to exhibition stage?
The first step is to draw on a sketch pad without any pretense or expectations. The studio is where the sifting through drawings and decision making come in, in regard to what I will paint.
Can you tell us a little more about your creative working environment/studio?
I have a studio space at Onwards Gallery & Studios, which is a beautiful community of artists and creatives, ran magnificently by Artist and Founder Brett Piva. In my space there are drawings on every surface and clumps of paint piling up on various glass surfaces that I use as palettes.
