Rina Freiberg’s wild expressionist faces and vibrant abstracts are a translation of emotion and a playful disassembling of human interaction. Bold brushwork, hard lines and quirky etchings feature in both her drawing and painting work. Rina’s process is anchored in the unplanned. She works at pace, allowing the temperament of the medium at hand to dictate the direction of the work. Rina’s current work explores the dynamic feminine and romantic masculine.
Artist Interview
What medium do you work with, and why have you chosen them?
My work is energised and created with immediacy. Acrylics, pastels, charcoal and inks are my favourite to work with because of the responsive, expressive way they can be wielded.
How does your artwork get from initial concept to exhibition stage?
It always starts with a mark – a dot on a page or a strike on a blank canvas. From there I pull together a conversation. Sometimes the process is based in physicality and impulse, other times, mainly with commissions, creation is guided by parameters but never envisioned or absolute. The completed work is something that eventuates.
Can you tell us a little more about your creative working environment/studio?
I work between my home studio and a studio I use for larger scale pieces that demand a messier process. I am also a fan of setting up a temporary studio if I'm travelling. There is a fluidity to where, when and how I work because there is no separating art and life. One informs the other. I draw inspiration from connection and interaction, and that exists in activity, so I've learnt to always have materials on me. If there is the impulse to create, why deny it?
