Artist Interview
What medium do you work with, and why have you chosen them?
I work in oils as I love their buttery consistency and forgiving nature. I often use my hands instead of a brush to apply the paint and I think this earthy involvement with the medium brings sensuality to my work.
How does your artwork get from initial concept to exhibition stage?
In the first instance I am inspired by light on form. If I see light splashing on an object in a certain way, usually dramatic, I find myself itching to paint it and I can't wait to begin. My daughter is my muse for my figurative work and we do photoshoots every so often where I will dress her up and snap away. I will then go through them and see where the photos take me. Once I have a concrete idea I'll create a montage from various reference photos and start painting.
Can you tell us a little more about your creative working environment/studio?
For many years I would set up my painting space in the kitchen after the kids went to school however when we built our home in 2011 I included a studio, and I love it. It has a view of the Brisbane River and the everchanging light on the ghost gums lining it is very inspiring and peaceful at the same time.
