Artist Profile

Zoe Sernack is an artist who lives and works in Sydney, Australia. Zoe holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from The National Art School and works on a full time studio practice. Zoe has been exhibiting for over 28 years, been in over 75 exhibitions. She has been a finalist in numerous art prizes such as the Fisher’s Ghost Award, Hornsby Art Award, Gosford Art Award, Into the Light Art Award and the Lethbridge Landscape Art Award.

Zoes’ art process is about continually engaging with the natural world. A keen observer of her environment, Zoe wants us to understand her visual language through an inbuilt desire to constantly engage with the world she experiences. Her paintings are multi-layered, being as much about the medium of paint and the process of painting as with an experience of the Australian landscape.

Her work explores the connections between landscape, memory and the subconscious. She has an instinctive understanding of colour, line and texture while balancing abstracted forms. Zoes’ objective has never been to depict but to evoke a visual connection. Whether it be a sense of place, a feeling or a memory.

Artist Interview

What medium do you work with, and why have you chosen them?

The majority of my work is acrylic on wooden boards. Acrylic allows me to work quickly as my works contains many layers. I also scratch and etch into the wooden panels. Painting landscapes and botanicals, I feel like engaging with a natural surface is honoring the land it comes from.

How does your artwork get from initial concept to exhibition stage?

I work on many artworks at the same time. with the small works I can work on 10 at a time and the larger works 3-4 at the same time. Working on works as a collective in the beginning gives a stronger connection and relationship to the works. Slowly each work gets its own personality, and then I work on them as individual pieces, fine tuning the balance, colour and compositions.

Can you tell us a little more about your creative working environment/studio?

I have a studio in my home. With 2 children this allows me to use every single moment in between to paint. I can also easily become a night owl. To paint all night and fall into bed close by is the best way to get as much time to do what I love. My home studio always bursting with creativity.
